Scaling & Root Planing in Laguna Niguel

Combat gum infections and revitalize your oral health with scaling and root planing at our Laguna Niguel clinic. Gum diseases are caused by plaque buildup that inflames the gums, causing them to recede and form infected pockets. Without treatment, this can lead to bone and tooth loss. Our deep cleaning procedure removes plaque and tartar from below the gum line, smoothing the roots to promote healing and prevent further infection. Book an appointment with Dr. Adam Vaghari today and discover the best scaling and root planing treatments to protect your gums and preserve your smile.

What is Scaling and Root Planing?

Scaling and root planing is a two-part deep cleaning procedure that’s designed to treat gum disease and restore oral health. Here’s how it works:
Scaling: Your dental hygienist removes plaque and tartar (calcified plaque) from above and below the gum line using a periodontal scaler, cleaning down to the base of the periodontal pockets.
Root Planing: The roots of your teeth are smoothed out and plaque is removed. This helps eliminate bacterial toxins and allows the gums to reattach to the teeth, reducing pocket depth.
This procedure may require multiple visits and is often performed under local anesthesia for your comfort. We make the entire process as comfortable and convenient as possible with multiple sedation options and appointment slots at our Laguna Niguel dental studio.

After Care Tips

After scaling and root planing, it’s normal to experience some mild discomfort, sensitivity, or gum tenderness for a couple days. Here’s how to care for your gums to speed up healing:
  • Follow Medication Instructions: Your dentist may prescribe antibiotics, antimicrobial mouth rinses, or subantimicrobial-dose doxycycline to control infection and promote healing. Use them as instructed to prevent potential infections.
  • Maintain Gentle Oral Hygiene: Brush twice and floss once a day gently to avoid irritating your gums. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and avoid vigorous rinsing for the first 24 hours.
  • Avoid Irritants: Stay away from smoking, alcohol, and spicy or crunchy foods that may irritate your gums during the healing process.
  • Use Sensitivity Products: If you experience tooth sensitivity, use desensitizing toothpaste or a fluoride rinse as recommended by your dentist.
  • Attend Follow-Up Appointments: Schedule periodontal maintenance visits every 3-4 months to monitor your gum health and prevent reinfection.
  • Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water to help flush out bacteria and keep your mouth clean and clear.
